The job is in Philadelphia, PA. Below is what the official statistics say about living and working there.
How Philadelphia compares. Among the 100 largest places in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is #1 by population, #96 for long commutes (#1 = fewest), #80 for rent (#1 = cheapest), #22 for remote work (#1 = most). Its county, Philadelphia County, is #4 of 67 counties for average pay ($83,187).
Philadelphia has 1,579,706 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 12.1% of the population of Pennsylvania. It covers 134 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 11,760 people per square mile. The median age is 35.3, 14% younger than the state median (35.3 against 40.9).
The median gross rent is $1,397 a month (rent plus utilities), 16% above the state median ($1,397 against $1,209). Over a year that is 27.1% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $243,100, which is 3.9 times the median household income ($61,953); a ratio under 4 usually means ownership is within reach for many households. 51.8% of households own their home, 25% below the state average (51.8% against 69.3%). A low ownership share points to a rental-heavy market with more apartments and shorter stays.
The Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD metropolitan area has 2,897,830 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $54,310 a year, 7% above the national median ($54,310 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are office and administrative support (320,580 jobs, median $49,040); transportation and material moving (247,580 jobs, median $44,740); food preparation and serving related (235,150 jobs, median $34,710). The area is most specialised in healthcare support (1.5 times) and legal (1.4 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are management ($131,960) and computer and mathematical ($107,250). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Philadelphia County was 4.3%. 63.6% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Philadelphia County; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.
Among workers, 46.0% drive alone, 16.7% use public transit, 7.1% walk, 18.4% work from home. 23.9% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 46% above the state average (23.9% against 16.4%).
35.4% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, about the same as the state share (35.4% against 35.2%). 15.2% of residents were born outside the United States, 97% above the state share (15.2% against 7.7%). The poverty rate is 21.4%, 82% above the state rate (21.4% against 11.7%).
The warmest month is Jul, averaging 76°F (24.6°C), and the coolest is Jan at 30°F (-1.0°C). About 1,228 mm (48 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; Jul is the wettest month (124 mm) and Jan the driest (78 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.
Closest cities in this guide: Bala Cynwyd (5 miles, rent 35% higher); Camden (5 miles, rent 12% lower); Collingswood (7 miles, rent 7% higher); Cherry Hill Mall (8 miles, rent 53% higher). Rent differences are against Philadelphia; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
