Canyon County is a county of Idaho with 250,790 residents. Its economy produced $11,738 million in 2024 (ranked #2 of 44 counties) and had 88,684 jobs with an average annual pay of $51,903 (#15 for pay). The unemployment rate was 3.2% in 2026M09. It is part of the Boise City, ID metropolitan area (outlying county).
Canyon County produced about $11,738 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 9.1% of the combined output of the 44 counties of Idaho that BEA reports (about 13.0% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 2nd of 44 on that measure. Per resident that is $46,803, 30% below the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $66,702. In current dollars output grew 8.0% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation. The gap between its output rank (2nd) and its output-per-resident rank (33rd) shows that population is large relative to the value of what is produced here.
BLS counts 88,684 jobs located in Canyon County on average in 2024, spread over 8,946 employer sites (about 10 jobs per site). That is 0.35 jobs for every resident, close to the 0.35 of the typical county in Idaho, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $51,903, 11% below the average of all counties in the state ($51,903 against $58,412). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 3.6% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are construction (14.4% of private jobs, $59,771 a year on average), manufacturing (14.3% of private jobs, $65,150 a year on average), health care and social assistance (14.0% of private jobs, $51,855 a year on average). Together they hold 42.7% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is professional and technical services at $76,330 a year, followed by wholesale trade ($69,271). The county is specialised in several industries: agriculture, forestry, fishing (4.8 times the US share, 3,417 jobs); construction (2.4 times the US share, 11,350 jobs); transportation and warehousing (1.9 times the US share, 7,028 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: accommodation and food services ($22,742). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Canyon County was 3.2%, about the same as the average of the state's counties (3.2% against 3.3%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 136,328. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 3.2% (2026M09) to 4.4% (2026M01); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $76,488 (ACS 2020–2024), about the same as the state median ($76,488 against $77,800). The guide covers 3 cities with this as the main county: Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton. Open any of them for rent, home values, commuting and climate. Within the county, median rent runs from $1,147 in Middleton to $1,420 in Nampa, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
