The job is in New Orleans, LA. Below is what the official statistics say about living and working there.
How New Orleans compares. Among the 80 largest places in Louisiana, New Orleans is #1 by population, #5 for remote work (#1 = most), #7 for college degrees (#1 = most), #65 for homeownership (#1 = highest). Its county, Orleans Parish, is #9 of 64 counties for average pay ($67,626).
New Orleans has 371,853 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 8.1% of the population of Louisiana. It covers 170 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 2,194 people per square mile. The median age is 38.8, about the same as the state median (38.8 against 38.0).
The median gross rent is $1,251 a month (rent plus utilities), 18% above the state median ($1,251 against $1,064). Over a year that is 26.5% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $315,700, which is 5.6 times the median household income ($56,631); a ratio above 5 usually means buying is out of reach without savings or a second income. 51.2% of households own their home, 24% below the state average (51.2% against 67.4%). A low ownership share points to a rental-heavy market with more apartments and shorter stays.
The New Orleans-Metairie, LA metropolitan area has 445,550 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $47,290 a year, 7% below the national median ($47,290 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are office and administrative support (51,170 jobs, median $43,390); food preparation and serving related (50,540 jobs, median $26,000); transportation and material moving (42,140 jobs, median $40,080). The area is most specialised in legal (1.9 times) and protective service (1.3 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are management ($105,850) and architecture and engineering ($101,450). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Orleans Parish was 4.2%. 60.2% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Orleans Parish; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.
Among workers, 62.1% drive alone, 4.5% use public transit, 5.7% walk, 14.9% work from home. 10.1% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 33% below the state average (10.1% against 15.2%). Remote work is more common than in the state as a whole, which widens the set of employers a resident can work for without moving.
42.4% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, 57% above the state share (42.4% against 27.0%). 6.6% of residents were born outside the United States, 36% above the state share (6.6% against 4.9%). The poverty rate is 22.6%, 19% above the state rate (22.6% against 18.9%).
The warmest month is Jul, averaging 83°F (28.5°C), and the coolest is Jan at 54°F (12.0°C). About 1,532 mm (60 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; Aug is the wettest month (190 mm) and Nov the driest (76 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.
Closest cities in this guide: Chalmette (8 miles, rent 11% lower); Meraux (9 miles, rent 16% lower); Terrytown (12 miles, rent 9% lower); Gretna (12 miles, rent 15% lower). Rent differences are against New Orleans; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
