The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Middleware & Automation Engineer to lead the automation, modernization, and operational lifecycle of our enterprise middleware infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and maintaining robust automation frameworks, embedding DevOps practices into deployment pipelines, and ensuring the high availability, security, and scalability of multi-platform middleware environments across hybrid cloud and on-premises systems.
Key Responsibilities
Middleware Administration & Automation
Design, build, and maintain enterprise-grade automation solutions for middleware provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, and decommissioning using Ansible, Python, and YAML.
Develop reusable automation frameworks and self-healing workflows for core application servers (IBM WAS, IBM Liberty, IBM IHS, Apache Tomcat, JBoss EAP).
Convert manual middleware operations into fully automated workflows, establishing standard runbooks, compliance validation, and configuration drift detection mechanisms.
DevOps & CI/CD Integration
Architect, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and Jenkins to automate application deployments across non-production and production environments.
Integrate middleware infrastructure and configurations into Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and Configuration-as-Code (CaC) frameworks.
Implement release orchestration, automated rollback procedures, and embed automated security and governance controls directly into deployment pipelines.
Middleware Platform Operations
Oversee multi-environment operations (Dev, QA, UAT, Production) for web and application servers, load balancer integrations, reverse proxies, and messaging systems.
Configure clustering, high availability (HA), session persistence, SSL/TLS security, and resource optimization.
Conduct capacity planning, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis (RCA) for complex, high-severity platform incidents.
Cloud, Infrastructure & Monitoring
Automate the deployment and operational governance of middleware workloads on Microsoft Azure, hybrid cloud platforms, and VMware virtualization environments.
Utilize VMware Aria Automation and Aria Operations for infrastructure monitoring, capacity management, and operational governance.
Implement proactive monitoring, log aggregation, and alerting frameworks using enterprise observability suites to ensure system reliability and compliance.
Your Future at Kyndryl Every position at Kyndryl offers a way forward to grow your career. We have opportunities that you won't find anywhere else, including hands-on experience, learning opportunities, and the chance to certify in all four major platforms. Whether you want to broaden your knowledge base or narrow your scope and specialize in a specific sector, you can find your opportunity here.
Who You Are
You're good at what you do and possess the required experience to prove it. However, equally as important - you have a growth mindset; keen to drive your own personal and professional development. You are customer-focused - someone who prioritizes customer success in their work. And finally, you're open and borderless - naturally inclusive in how you work with others.
Required Skills
Core Middleware Expertise: Deep, hands-on experience in administering, configuring, and tuning enterprise application and web servers, specifically IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS), IBM Liberty, IBM HTTP Server (IHS), Apache Tomcat, and JBoss EAP across Linux and Windows environments.
Automation & Scripting: Strong proficiency in configuration management and scripting using Ansible (Ansible Automation Platform), Python, PowerShell, Bash, and YAML to deliver automation-first operational workflows.
DevOps & CI/CD Orchestration: Proven track record in developing and maintaining automated deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub/GitHub Actions, or Jenkins, alongside strong Git version control practices.
Monitoring & Platform Security: Solid understanding of enterprise observability tools (Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Splunk, ELK, Grafana, or Prometheus), SSL/TLS certificate management, load balancing, and network security concepts.
Troubleshooting & Analytical Skills: Exceptional analytical and root-cause troubleshooting abilities, with a proven capacity to manage critical production environments independently and collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Skills
Secondary Middleware Platforms: Operational familiarity with Oracle WebLogic, Microsoft IIS, and Apache HTTP Server.
Cloud & Virtualization: Practical experience deploying and managing middleware workloads on Microsoft Azure, hybrid cloud architectures, and VMware Aria Suite (Aria Automation and Aria Operations).
Containerization & Kubernetes: Exposure to containerized middleware deployments utilizing Docker, Kubernetes, or Red Hat OpenShift.
Compliance & Infrastructure-as-Code: Familiarity with drift detection, compliance validation, and Configuration-as-Code frameworks within continuous delivery ecosystems.

How to prepare and behave
This is editorial guidance, not information from the employer.
Read the whole description and match your examples to its requirements; use the same words the posting uses where they are true for you.
Research the employer before the interview: what it does, who its customers are and recent news; prepare two or three questions about the work.
Arrive early (or log in early for a video call), dress one step above the daily dress code, and test your camera and audio beforehand.
Answer with short stories: the situation, what you did and the result. Give numbers when you have them and never invent them.
Be honest about gaps; say what you did to learn and how fast you can close them.
Ask about the team, the first 90 days, how success is measured and the schedule; do not open with salary and time off.
When pay comes up, know the market range for the occupation and your lowest acceptable offer before you answer; ask for the full package in writing.
Send a short thank-you message within a day, mentioning one thing you discussed.
The listing mentions a remote or flexible location. Confirm with the employer whether remote work applies to your state: taxes, licensing and benefits can depend on where you live.
Have code, data work or projects you can show, and be ready to think aloud: many technical interviews test how you reason, not only the answer.
The listing is remote or has no US state we could identify. Read the country guide for pay, taxes, law and cost of living by state.
