Description
Lead Substation Structural Engineer
Leidos Engineering offers its knowledge and expertise over a wide area of cutting-edge energy technologies and independent oversight, combined with proven business acumen. Building our work for publicly- and privately-owned utilities, financial institutions and local governments, we are able to provide our clients with business insight into all sectors of the infrastructure industry.
We are seeking a Lead Substation Structural Engineer with a B.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering and 8+ years of structural design engineering and review experience. Experience within the electric utility industry - either working directly for a utility or an engineering consultancy - is strongly preferred, as is prior engineering work experience in California. The candidate must have a strong educational background in design of steel structures, concrete structures, geotechnical engineering, and foundations. Experience performing and reviewing substation structure design, rigid bus design, foundation design, oil spill containment design, retaining walls, concrete and masonry control shelters, and firewalls is preferred. Candidate must also have proven client management experience, with the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships while managing expectations.
This position will consist of performing design reviews of the aforementioned civil/structural design components in support of the development of bid/construction packages for substation projects. Candidate will primarily function as a senior engineer leading project, performing design reviews, as well as developing junior staff members. Experience with design and review for structures and foundations to industry codes and standards under seismic loading conditions is required. Site-visits to client substation facilities are expected to be part of the work, along with occasional travel for client meetings and industry-related events.
Candidate must comply with quality control and safe work practices and maintain compliance with project scope, schedule and budget expectations. This position will be a senior member of a design team comprised of engineers, designers, and drafting technicians, and will be expected to manage and work on projects for multiple clients concurrently.

The job is in Irvine, CA. Below is what the official statistics say about living and working there.
How Irvine compares. Among the 145 largest places in California, Irvine is #14 by population, #14 for college degrees (#1 = most), #127 for rent (#1 = cheapest), #123 for homeownership (#1 = highest). Its county, Orange County, is #9 of 58 counties for average pay ($81,403).
Irvine has 311,690 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 0.8% of the population of California. It covers 66 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 4,750 people per square mile. The median age is 34.0, 10% younger than the state median (34.0 against 37.9).
The median gross rent is $2,997 a month (rent plus utilities), 47% above the state median ($2,997 against $2,036). Over a year that is 26.3% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $1,191,500, which is 8.7 times the median household income ($136,719); a ratio above 5 usually means buying is out of reach without savings or a second income. 44.5% of households own their home, 20% below the state average (44.5% against 55.9%). A low ownership share points to a rental-heavy market with more apartments and shorter stays.
The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA metropolitan area has 6,271,560 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $55,850 a year, 10% above the national median ($55,850 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are office and administrative support (702,480 jobs, median $52,710); food preparation and serving related (588,660 jobs, median $38,460); healthcare support (537,460 jobs, median $35,630). The area is most specialised in arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media (2.2 times) and healthcare support (1.7 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are management ($136,490) and legal ($128,110). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Orange County was 4.3%. 67.1% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Orange County; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.
Among workers, 59.1% drive alone, 1.1% use public transit, 3.7% walk, 28.0% work from home. 11.9% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 39% below the state average (11.9% against 19.4%). Remote work is more common than in the state as a whole, which widens the set of employers a resident can work for without moving.
70.6% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, 90% above the state share (70.6% against 37.1%). 39.8% of residents were born outside the United States, 48% above the state share (39.8% against 27.0%). The poverty rate is 10.8%, 10% below the state rate (10.8% against 12.0%).
The warmest month is Aug, averaging 73°F (23.0°C), and the coolest is Dec at 56°F (13.2°C). About 299 mm (12 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; Feb is the wettest month (68 mm) and Jun the driest (1 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.
Closest cities in this guide: Tustin (4 miles, rent 18% lower); Lake Forest (6 miles, rent 11% lower); Santa Ana (8 miles, rent 31% lower); Mission Viejo (8 miles, rent 5% lower). Rent differences are against Irvine; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
