How to prepare and behave

This is editorial guidance, not information from the employer.

Know your rights as a candidate and an employee:

The city

The job is in Milwaukee, WI. Below is what the official statistics say about living and working there.

How Milwaukee compares. Among the 80 largest places in Wisconsin, Milwaukee is #1 by population, #80 for household income (#1 = highest), #78 for homeownership (#1 = highest), #61 for college degrees (#1 = most). Its county, Milwaukee County, is #3 of 72 counties for average pay ($69,142).

The place in numbers

Milwaukee has 566,973 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 9.6% of the population of Wisconsin. It covers 96 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 5,895 people per square mile. The median age is 32.4, 19% younger than the state median (32.4 against 40.2).

Housing

The median gross rent is $1,059 a month (rent plus utilities), about the same as the state median ($1,059 against $1,087). Over a year that is 23.4% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $184,000, which is 3.4 times the median household income ($54,234); a ratio under 4 usually means ownership is within reach for many households. 41.8% of households own their home, 38% below the state average (41.8% against 67.8%). A low ownership share points to a rental-heavy market with more apartments and shorter stays.

Work and pay

The Milwaukee-Waukesha, WI metropolitan area has 820,780 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $51,160 a year, about the same as the national median ($51,160 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are office and administrative support (89,880 jobs, median $48,440); transportation and material moving (71,880 jobs, median $44,820); sales and related (70,510 jobs, median $41,770). The area is most specialised in production (1.5 times) and healthcare support (1.2 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are management ($128,250) and legal ($100,570). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Milwaukee County was 3.7%. 64.4% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Milwaukee County; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.

Getting around

Among workers, 66.3% drive alone, 5.0% use public transit, 4.0% walk, 12.9% work from home. 7.9% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 22% below the state average (7.9% against 10.2%).

People and education

27.4% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, 18% below the state share (27.4% against 33.4%). 11.1% of residents were born outside the United States, 114% above the state share (11.1% against 5.2%). The poverty rate is 22.8%, 116% above the state rate (22.8% against 10.6%).

Climate

The warmest month is Jul, averaging 72°F (22.5°C), and the coolest is Jan at 20°F (-6.8°C). About 948 mm (37 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; Jun is the wettest month (125 mm) and Jan the driest (40 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.

Nearby cities to compare

Closest cities in this guide: Wauwatosa (3 miles, rent 36% higher); Shorewood (4 miles, rent 27% higher); Glendale (5 miles, rent 35% higher); Whitefish Bay (5 miles, rent 26% higher). Rent differences are against Milwaukee; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
