Know your rights as a candidate and an employee:
The job is in Albany, NY. Below is what the official statistics say about living and working there.
How Albany compares. Among the 120 largest places in New York, Albany is #6 by population, #110 for homeownership (#1 = highest), #21 for long commutes (#1 = fewest), #25 for rent (#1 = cheapest). Its county, Albany County, is #3 of 62 counties for average pay ($82,387).
Albany has 100,492 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 0.5% of the population of New York. It covers 21 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 4,695 people per square mile. The median age is 32.0, 20% younger than the state median (32.0 against 39.8).
The median gross rent is $1,216 a month (rent plus utilities), 25% below the state median ($1,216 against $1,621). Over a year that is 23.5% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $234,700, which is 3.8 times the median household income ($61,986); a ratio under 4 usually means ownership is within reach for many households. 38.2% of households own their home, 30% below the state average (38.2% against 54.4%). A low ownership share points to a rental-heavy market with more apartments and shorter stays.
The Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY metropolitan area has 449,410 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $58,460 a year, 15% above the national median ($58,460 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are office and administrative support (58,090 jobs, median $48,720); business and financial operations (35,720 jobs, median $82,330); sales and related (35,370 jobs, median $38,020). The area is most specialised in life, physical, and social science (2.0 times) and legal (1.4 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are management ($127,460) and legal ($103,450). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Albany County was 3.9%. 63.3% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Albany County; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.
Among workers, 55.2% drive alone, 10.2% use public transit, 8.5% walk, 13.2% work from home. 7.7% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 72% below the state average (7.7% against 27.4%).
45.3% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, 13% above the state share (45.3% against 40.2%). 15.2% of residents were born outside the United States, 33% below the state share (15.2% against 22.8%). The poverty rate is 22.9%, 64% above the state rate (22.9% against 14.0%).
The warmest month is Jul, averaging 71°F (21.6°C), and the coolest is Jan at 21°F (-6.0°C). About 1,198 mm (47 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; Oct is the wettest month (124 mm) and Jan the driest (73 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.
Closest cities in this guide: Troy (8 miles, rent 3% lower); Cohoes (9 miles, similar rent); Niskayuna (11 miles, rent 31% higher); Rotterdam (11 miles, rent 5% higher). Rent differences are against Albany; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
